You have seen some of those t-shirts in streetstyle magazines, or spotted celebrities wearing them and would like to get your hands on them. So you go online and search for info and you find that there are loads upon loads of *a bathing ape t-shirts available for sale on the internet. You go on eBay and find that there are tees on auctions that go for USD$9.90 and no bidders for eternity, yet you spot another auction for a tee that has a similar design that has multiple bidders and the price closes at several times more compared to the previous auction. You wonder whats the difference...
If the above scenario sounds familiar to you, welcome to the wonderful world of auctions, trends, hype, and general economics. Without going too much into the history of the brand, basically the label "a bathing ape" has been around for more than 10 years. It started as an underground label in the backstreets of Tokyo, and has grown in scale and popularity over the years. Through the scarcity of the tees and word-of-mouth among the hip and trendy, the price of the tees has sky-rocketed immensely. And subsequently, fake bape tees have popped up more and more each time.
This here is a guide on how to spot the real among the fakes. It should not be used solely to judge the authenticity of the t-shirt, other factors including fabric quality and the print design must be taken into account. Like lots of other clothing brands out in the market, the labels and packaging are changed frequently, either due to changing of brand marketing, or for the different clothing design season
First thing to note is the bag used to package the tee in.
*Picture shows the overall comparison of the bag
Here are other details of the bag comparison
Other than the bag, the label tag can also give clues to the authenticity
The Sleeve Label
Depending on the print designs, some differences can be noticed
Special thanks goes out to Skinner for his contribution to the contents on this page

The Bapesta is probably one of the more recognisable trend shoes for the past few years. One simple key to note, is that it looks exactly like the Nike Air Force 1 low. Thats the whole point of the bapesta, it was designed to emulate the shoe of choice among the fore runners of streetstyle in Japan. The classic "uptowns" are worn by a great majority of the trendsetters, be it nostalgia, hip hop or b-ball influences.
Nigo simply wanted a shoe that was like the Air Force 1 low, but re-interpreted in the bathing ape way. Hence we have the iconic swoosh replaced by the "sta-swoosh", the trademark sole pattern re-worked, and the heel tab featuring the bape embroidery.
The famous words from Spiderman: "With power comes great responsibility"
As with bape and other fashionable products, "With popularity comes mass immitation." Early bapesta fakes were done using the fake Air Force 1's that were already in the market. The most noticeable flaw are the ankle and heel shapes, not mention an ugly boxy toe-box.
Lately, there have been fakes that are better-made, with well-made boxes and shoebags as well.
Take a look at the detailed pic of the REAL bapesta
Note the following:
* Overall shape is exactly like the nike AF1 low
* Heel tab embroidery shows the "bape" logo clearly, the tail of the "A-star" that intersects the letter "P" is not joined to letter "E".
* The "registered R" does not touch the letter B, and the word "sta" and "bape" should not be connected.
* "Sta swoosh" is cleanly made and stitched, the jagged edge of the swoosh is parallel
Now lets look at the FAKE bapesta
Compared to the pic of the REAL bapesta,
* Toebox is chunkier, and shorter than the real bapesta
* Ankle area is lower
* Heel tab shape is off
* Heel tab embroidery is different
* Sta swoosh has wrong shape, the tail is too short in the 1st case
In most cases, the fake bapesta is made with poor workmanship and low-quality materials.
Next, the box details
Note that the REAL bapesta box has:
* Size Label located at bottom right corner
* The Box top lid when closed, should not cover the Label
* The box print should be clear and made of hard cardboard material
Shoes bought from the official Bape stores will come with the nylon "Footsoldier" shoe bag. Most Fake bapestas come with purple "Footsoldier" shoe bag. (Don't ask me why purple)
NOTE: Most fakes come with purple/red shoe bags, but that does not mean that bape sta's with purple/red shoe bags are fake!!! _________________ Aim with Bape

Very nice post, but the clothing part is confusing at some points. Thats why I only buy Bathing Ape clothing from legit eBay powersellers or well known sellers. _________________ NO F#$KING USED SNEAKERS.

to all BAPE experts,
Saw one with heel tab embroidery shows "registered R" connect to the letter B (but the word "STA" does not connect to the letter E) and it comes with extra laces... is it a fake one ? sorry no pics. Many thanks. _________________

The legit check is a little off? or is it my bape shirt is really fakes? There's a black string inside the sleeve tag, and there's a pale bape logo inside the collar tag too. Experts please help me check thanks

HAHAHA Didn't know there was a sticky....I just posted a long ass comparison between BAPE and FAPE...here it is:
Nowadays FAPES look realer and realer.
I usually make my judgement by seller's feedback, location (Hong Kong is notorious for fakes), detailed pictures, and price (if it's too good to be true, then it is!).
Retail for hoodies are around $250-300. The dope ones are usually hard to get and people queue in line for them. So nobody in their right mind would sell for under retail price. That's a fact.
As far as pictures go...FAPES look super real now. The only I can distinguish FAKES and REAL are tags....or other signs.
STITCHING on SHARK HOODY:
The FAKE one of this looks dead on real...but the giveaway is the stitching on the back of the hood...Usually not the case, but for this FAKE, the year is off lol (1995 instead of 1993)
REAL SHARK:
FAKE SHARK:
DETAILS on CHOMPER HOODY:[b]
Small details like this give it away...On the fake version, Nigo must've been drunk while outlining the "teeth"...
REAL CHOMPER:
FAKE CHOMPER:
TAGS on BABY MILO items:[b]
This is how I spot fake BABY MILO items...looking at the collar and sleeve tags. REAL collar tags state "Made in Japan" under the SIZE and "100% Cotton". Fake ones don't. Also, fake tags are discolored and look bad....
REAL BABY MILO TAG:
FAKE BABY MILO TAG:
**EDIT: I have made a new discovery! I found a FAKE BABY MILO tee with a collar tag that DOES have "MADE IN JAPAN". WOW! I guess you gotta really scrutinize the tag. FAKES are getting better and better!
Open Faced Zipper:[b]
There were a lot of fakes for this classic OG APExKAWS hoody. Real Bape Hoodies don't have open-faced zippers, all enclosed (except a few such as the OG BABY MILO Multi has open faced). Also, minor details--You can tell by the bottom of the hoody there's a difference. Fake ones have an extra patch of camo near the crotch where the zipper ends.
REAL:
FAKE:
WRONG TAGS???:[b]
A big clue is when you see a BAPE item with a MILO tag...that should tell you right off the bat that it's FAKE...

THOSE ARE ALL THE CLUES I CAN THINK OF AT THIS TIME(bored at work ) FEEL FREE TO AGREE/DISAGREE AND COMMENT WITH NEW CLUES, ETC....IN ORDER TO HELP MYSELF AND OTHERS TO SAVE $ AND WEED OUT THE FAPES. HOPE THIS HELPED!

the bape kaws skull hoodies have a blue outline on the skulls... no blue, no dice. it's fake.
also, you can easily tell real bapesta's from fake ones by the insoles. real ones have bape sta printed going opposite directions, while the fake ones ahve them going the same way. can't find pics at the moment, but i'll update with some. _________________
