There's always going to be a next generation of kids who grow up and start collecting, its just a phase. Some stick with it some don't. For example, lately, the trend is for people to dress like they're all grown up. Heck I even see people in university dressing like this, like wtf is this a job your at now. Back then kids dress like bums, now u got kids dressing all preppy and like they are in the real world. But yes OP i do agree with you, life goes on.

I was just looking at Nice Kicks, Hype beast and Sole Collector and started thinking "Whats the point to all this?".
I mean I understand people who enjoy collecting something of sentimental value, or someone who grew up with MJ in their life. But all this hype over some leather and shoe strings seems a little much doesn't it? Maybe I'm over analyzing but seriously what is the point, I know people who spend most their money on kicks and clothes, for what? To prove to your friends you're stylish? To show some sort of status? Thinking its time to stop worrying about whats on my feet and what kinda clothes I'm wearing, and more about what kind of person I portray myself as.
Anyone else feel the same?
if people felt the same as what's the point to this? people wouldn't be on here looking at what's comming out etc. But many different people do it for different reasons. I spend alot of my money on kicks, because I love shoes!I love to collect them, wear them, also part of it is a rush. At a huge release there's nothing like the feeling of getting a pair of shoes in your size that a 200 other people at the same place aren't gonna get. I dont buy them to be stylish, I could give a rats' ass if people thought i was stylish. It's also cool to look back and think what you had to do to get that particular shoe, or some major event about it. I've only been collecting about 2 years, but in that 2 years I've met some of my real good friends.

I think you can say "whats the point" about anything? Why eat, youre just gonna get hungry again? why not smoke, youre gonna die anyway? So i dont think thats the correct way to look at it. Tons of people (and in my estimation the majority of those into sneakers) do things out of insecurity and the need to impress others. They can only define themselves by what they have or the way others perceive them. If that's how you are, then yes, you definitely need to ask 'whats the point of all this'? However, that doesnt have to be the case. For me, this is just something i happened to get into that i enjoy. Like how some people enjoy collecting stamps or comic books. I dont try to show off what i get/have to others, or care about who likes what i have, or any of that. If you feel the same way, then youre just doing what makes you happy.
You have to realize that these websites don't JUST dedicate themselves to sneakers.
Hypebeast has really broaden their content. They have articles on architecture, shoes, clothes, and just fashion in general.

he(joepro) does have a point. .& bizbeagle thats your opinion & everyone has their opinion. .& if you feel like "whats the point?" why are you on solecollector contributing post & etc. .so you cant really ask "whats the point?" if your on here. .you apparently have a purpose or else your just following what everyone else is doing. .

I agree with everyone's opinion that posted so far, I think the older you get, the more you realize that in reality, it is just material things, and once you have more responsibilites i.e kids, bills, etc, you slow way down. I for one, love kicks.. adidas, jordan, sperry...anything that looks good, i rock and i can care less if people dig it. I'm not necessarily a collector like some cats on here that got 80 + shoes, but i got a decent rotation, and out of the rotation that I do have, there is a mixture of shoes that i dug while i was in store, and some retros that had sentimental value to me that when i was a kid..i couldn't get them..and i finally had the chance to own them as an adult.
unfortunately, there are alot of kids out there that just buy a bunch of limited edition exclusive shit for status, and you don't even have to know the kids, you can just tell the way the type about their shit on forums, but also...most of those kids come from higher middle-first class background...so it's really nothin to most of them to cop kicks that others would shoot somebody else over, it's not burning their pockets so they can care less if its just material shit
it's different when you have grown up collectors with nice careers that cop kicks because...they have been doin it since the 80s-90s and they can afford to cop everything because they are heavy in the game and have the funds to back it up..this would be evident for most that they collect because they truly love the shoe culture
they got lucky growing up rich, so they like to shoe off.
I've asked myself the same thing a few times. I guess when I get bored with this. Sometimes right after a purchase. But then I remember why I do it. Having only 4pair of shoes; white & black sneaks, work shoes, sandals, is kinda boring. I dont like being bored.
Also, a lot of the kicks I buy I grew up wanting, so I buy them. I often think about what I'm going to do once I get my priorities together LOL. When I decide to just stop buying or sell them all. But for now, I do this because I like it, and it's my hobby. A hobby that other people's opinion have no bearing on.
But in the end....there is no point. Because there is no end. Just like the owner of the Shoezeum said. There will always be a market for shoes and footwear comfort and enhancements, so new designs will never cease to exist thus the game will always be around. Unless these will be family heirlooms, which they most likely wont, it has no point. Just like collecting snowglobes or baseball cards has no real point. I guess you can call it your own little scrapbook of history through shoes. It doesn't mean anything other than self-satisfaction for the average collector.
