Did you not visit Sports and Things in Streatham? There used to be a few other spots out west (Passenger, Acupuncture, etc) that used to have loads of vintage stuff in the early 90's.
Opium in Paris is best place I've seen in Europe for vintage stuff, none for sale unfortunately. There used to be a few other stores that specialised in vintage shoes when I last visited six or seven years ago.
Saying that the Japanese were always years ahead of us when it came to stores like this.

S&T shut down about four or five years ago but by that time the 'golden era' for bargains was long gone. The bargains were to be had before the Japanese kids discovered it in the late 90's, when they doubled their prices.
Unfortunately they were also the kind of people who'd rather let stock rot in their basement than sell it for reasonable money. In the end the sold the whole lot to Sports Direct and some of it ended up in their discount stores, I've no idea if it all did though...

Explains it. That was before I came to the uk. Having maniac guys like that is a double edged sword, it's great because they are the only ones who can make long term collections. But it also a ball ache trying to get them to actually part with their stuff !
