just finished a rough outline of my friends sleeve.
although he's probably too broke to ever get it done, drawing didn't come out too bad. _________________ www.stoise.com

actually, these drawings of mine are freehand. what you're talking about are called grids, I haven't done dont those in more than 15 years. The reason the lines are there is when I draw something big on illustration paper, and the particular drawing of a character is a straight face, I want to make sure that it is evenly proportioned. Say for example I want to make sure the left ear is the same distance as the right ear from the centerline, that's what the horizontal lines are there for. Or the curvature of the left side of the head is the same curvature of the right side. Now if I draw something small, then I wouldn't really need these guidelines. But drawing small is something I dont like because I can't really put that much detail on it. Grids are actually a pain in the arse for me, never been a fan of it. I think it's a slow and long process. Plus these drawings are not copied from a picture, as long as I know what the main features of a character is, I can work my way from there, the rest is just imagination added on. |

I see what your sayin. I was taught that "grid" technique back in like 8th or 9th grade (20 years ago) and that is what your work looked like to me. I draw freehand and i dont use that technique or any measuring technique. I guess its all in your own preference cuz i also dont care for drawing cartoons either. Cartoon art is fairly easy to draw but i perfer realism, its more challenging. But like i said its all in your own preference. But anyhow keep up the good work... |

| Thanks. I learned grid technique around the same time, 9th grade. I think it is the first technique art students are taught when copying and enlarging a picture on drawing paper. I know the last time I used it was on canvas in art class nearly 2 decades ago, but everyone opted to using a projector instead including me afterwards. And like I said, I dont like it, It's just time-consuming. My drawings are done freehand mostly on 14 x 17 inches illustration paper, but I make mistakes sketching every now and then, that's why my paper is usually messy with lots of corrections. |
