The first launch of the McFly Hyperdunk took place yesterday at UNDFTD Santa Monica, and Kobe Bryant even dropped by for some added fanfare.

words_Nick DePaula

It’s perhaps one of the most hyped up launches of the past five years — for a basketball shoe that is. Second to maybe only the Titanium XX3 Premier colorway and its equally hectic release, the McFly-inspired Nike Hyperdunk caused quite a scene at UNDFTD’s Santa Monica location yesterday. Hordes of fans and Nike loyalists camped out overnight for their shot at one of just 100 pairs to be made available to the public, and while there were tons of complaints after the fact about the lack of organization and lack of line control, several lucky campers got a crack at a pair of Hyperdunks for themselves, and ten size 14’s were even signed by Kobe himself, who drop by via a grand entrance for ten minutes.

Coming straight from his Skills Academy morning session that concluded earlier in the day, he arrived in hoop clothes and McFly Hyperdunks of his own, in a true-to-form Back To The Future remniscent Delorean. While he looked fairly cramped inside, seeing those doors fling open as the reigning MVP stepped out must’ve been a great experience for the countless Laker fans on hand.

New Balance has some new under-the-radar Hoops shoes in store this August, as they introduce both the 889 and 905 to performance-demanding ballers.

words_Jeremy Ripley

For decades now, New Balance has been the antithesis in a hoops market focused on gimmicks and overbearing advertising, offering no-frills, performance-rooted models such as the 885 and 902. ’08 will mark no end to the brand’s rich basketball tradition (which dates back to James Worthy and M.L. Carr) as they are set to release the 889 and 905 this coming August.

The 889 is crafted upon New Balance’s tried-and-true ABZORB EX foam, which provides ample stability without compromising comfort. The interface is unique and different from other foams in that it has no cell shape. In more undecorated terms, the implement does not compress, allowing for greater comfort over the course of a strenuous season.

The 905 initiates the second wave of New Balance models that incorporates the inventive Zip platform. (The 8025 and 8026 met wide acclaim in ‘07.) The shoe also features a tastefully placed midfoot strap that offers lockdown like Riker’s, while the Lightning Dry inner lining is famous in many running circles for its heat dissipation benefits and should provide the same benefits in this iteration.

The 889 will retail for $95.00, while the 905 will drop for $100.00. When we find out release availability for both sneakers, we’ll be sure to hit you with the info here at Sole Collector.com.

It was the one day we had marked on our calendar from the start of the Road Trip -- the wedding of our good friend and fellow writer Brandon Mattox.

words_Nick DePaula

When planning the Road Trip for this summer, it was mostly done on a whim, but there was definitely one day on the calendar that we had to make happen — June 21st. It was our good friend and fellow writer Brandon Mattox’s wedding, and we simply couldn’t miss it. The wedding reception took place in southern Wisconsin near Lake Geneva, and it was great to see our buddy Brandon officially become a married man. You’d probably recognize Brandon’s name from the past year, as he helped out a ton on the XX3 Issue and has also written Focus:Shop and Focus:Artist articles in print. His wife Anna has put up with his shoe-buying habits for quite some time now, so it’s no surprise she not only allowed him to wear Jordans, but she also threw on some Valentine’s Day Air Force 1’s herself.

Anna and Brandon Mattox:

And because he’s awesome — he bought twenty pairs of black/metallic silver Jordan V’s for those in his wedding. With the groomsmen:

And last but not least….it was Steve’s brilliant idea to go Dumb & Dumber style with awful suits. Zac and I of course chickened out last minute and went in boring polos and button-ups, but Steve and Jordan from Eastbay wouldn’t back down one bit. Full faux-Burberry and a mis-matched deep red combo. Wow.

To celebrate Kobe Bryant's ridiculous 81 point output against the Raptors two years ago, Nike has launched the Zoom 81, which looks to be quite a solid performer.

words_Nick DePaula

Just after last week’s successful launch of the ‘MVP’ Zoom Kobe III, Nike has already launched the latest Kobe-related shoe throughout parts of the Asia region — the Zoom 81. Made to commemorate Bryant’s ridiculous manhandling of the Toronto Raptors over two years ago on January 22, 2006, when he scored 81 points, the Zoom 81 also features the breathable webbed molding that defined the Zoom Kobe III’s upper, but this time along the toe. At the heel is a visible Zoom Air unit, and I’m also extremely intrigued by the altered outsole traction pattern — which looks to provide more wavebone coverage and improved grip as compared to the slippery Kobe III. As a size 13, I’m hoping Nike goes higher than their normal size 12 Asia release production, as these should challenge the big-brother Zoom Kobe III in the playability department. They are currently available on eBay from two reputable sellers — ID4Shoes and kbryant8twfan.

words_Nick DePaula

Athleisure footwear brand Clae has recently shown off some of their upcoming styles for this year’s Fall season, as they conducted a showing at tradeshow Bread and Butter Barcelona. Including new colorways of their popular Parker model as well as the Cousteau and Romare Hi, it looks to be another season of sharp and bold body colors anchored by pleasing lines along simple uppers.

Romare Hi:

Yet another Chinese-inspired pack is set to drop from Nike, this time inspired by "The Night of Sevens" Qi Xi Festival taking place early next August.

words_Nick DePaula

In traditional Chinese culture, Qi Xi, or The Night of Sevens, is comparable to Valentine’s Day in America and takes place on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar. This year, Qi Xi happens to fall on 8.7.08, just before the Olympic Games begin in China of course. Never one to pass up an opportunity for an inspired-by pack, Nike has created a series of three models, including the Court Force Premium Low and High as well as the Air Max 1 Premium to commemorate this year’s Qi Xi festival. The models feature white base colors with perforated leathers, royal patent leather and several accent colors, and are available now at Atmos.

The Fusion cycle continues, with the Jordan XX becoming the next subject to undergo the Air Force 1 hybrid treatment. However -- this one actually works.

words_Nick DePaula

The Jordan Fusion cycle continues on, and the Jordan XX is the next subject to be spliced with Nike’s Air Force 1 silhouette. I haven’t been too crazy about the previous hybrids, but this one might actually be my favorite. The mid panel underlay incorporates the XX laser graphic print, while the heel of the shoe features the XX 3/4’s molded TPU heel counter and the midsole features a lasered dimple pattern. The best touch on the shoe is the medial toe cap, which flows nicely with the rest of the upper. Look for the AJF20 Low to release later this Fall.

words_Nick DePaula

Taking on inspiration cues from the group of official Olympic Mascots, Fuwa, formerly known as ‘Friendlies,’ Nike has created a set of footwear releasing next month that includes the Vandal Low, Dunk Low, Blazer Low and Cortez models. The Mascots, Beibei (Fish), Jingjing (Giant Panda), Huanhuan (Olympic Flame), Yingying (Tibetan Antelope) and Nini (Swallow) all embody the spirit of traditionally popular Chinese animals and you can easily notice their color inspirations in each model.

As part of the adidas AZX Project that will begin launching on 8.8.08, Barcelona boutique Limiteditions got their crack at a ZX450.

words_Nick DePaula

Adidas has plans to drop a ton of boutique-designed ZX models throughout the summer and into the fall, and beginning the series with a 8.8.08 launch will be the ZX450 designed by Barcelona-based boutique Limiteditions. With a black base upper with sharp red and neon accents, the subtle and smooth ZX450 also features the Limiteditions logo along the tongue and store name at the insole. There’s also a nice ribbed mesh chosen to complement the nubuck upper.

Now this is a great looking Air Force 1, and it’s also one you don’t see everyday. This 1998 released AF1 low is nice, simple, and clean. An all white upper with a nice goldenrod colored Swoosh, heel tab and sole finish up this shoe. Very rare and hard to comeby today, 10 years later and especially in this completely deadstock condition.

These were released in 2006 and were one of the last AF1s released before the 25th Anniversary of the Air Force 1 began in 2007.

Dying for the return of more technical skate shoes of the 80's? Look no further than the Reebok Reebok Advanced Design collection, or Reebok R.A.D. for short.

words_Nick DePaula

While it doesn’t seem very advanced by today’s standards, over twenty years ago the Reebok R.A.D. collection (short for Reebok Advanced Design…yes…you say “Reebok” twice in the name) took on a starkly different aesthetic from the other skate shoe offerings of the era. With nubbed toe reinforcements, midfoot and toe straps depending on the cut and also severely durable rubber outsoles, the R.A.D. collection marked a time where skaters were evolving and demanding more protection. Reebok has plans to bring back the set soon this year, with a return to the vibrant colorways and logical material choices like performance meshes and durable leathers.

Here’s an Air Force 1 some people forget all about. Why? Well not many people remember that an Air Force 1 mid was released during the inside out series. They AF1 mids feature the same leather midsoles as well as premium uppers that are featured on the lows as well. The upper on this is very unique with a mixture of leather as well as wool which is on the side panels, toes, and tongue. Throw on a brown colored Swoosh and this shoe is complete. Unfortunately it was a sleeper and as a result, people are regretting passing on these.

Who would have ever guessed Sea World and Air Force 1s would some day collide? Nicknamed the Orcas due to their resemblance to the color scheme of killer whales. These were a part of a pack which also included an Air Trainer 1, Dunk High, and E-Cue. These as well as the rest of the Orca pack were available at urban accounts worldwide and were a limited release in 2004. You can go on-and-on with your own nicknames for the Orcas like Free Willy or the Chuck and Larry’s as I like to call them now. You know what i’m talking about if you’ve seen the movie!

This women’s Air Force 1 low is simply beautiful. A combination of leather and denim make these an easy buy for the ladies, and guys too. The ladies had easier chances of matching them though because they could goto any fashion store and most likely find a pair of black denim jeans with the same color pink stitching on them. Black and pink, AF1s, denim, need I say more? These were released in 2005 and were only available at urban accounts.

It's a different breed of footwear -- but we love shoes that much here at SC. Take a look at the expertly crafted AL-X series from Lowa, sure to meet all your hiking needs.

words_Jeremy Ripley

Today’s footwear market is shamelessly predicated on age-old reissues, invariably making way for dated design cues and antiquated cushioning systems. With the Nike/Jordan behemoth capturing 93 slots on the 2007 list of 100 best sellers, it is tough to forecast an end to this era of shoddy quality and limited shenanigans. Sure, there has been a fair share of wonderfully crafted models from yesteryear released over the past few years, (see Converse’s new take on the Pro Leather ’76 and Jordan Brand’s XX3) but if you’ve scanned the walls of a mall retailer recently, you’ve probably openly wondered, “Where’s the new stuff?”

As a connoisseur who’s always looking for new-age gems from all corners of the industry, I relish finding a pair and blasting my friends into the Twilight Zone with neglected and overlooked flavor. Over the course of the next few months, we here at Sole Collector will bring you intriguing, interesting, and atypical designs from the hiking, marine, and outdoors industries that catch our eye. In small doses of course.

Lowa, a Stamford, Connecticut mountaineering troupe offers German craftsmanship in each one of their hiking, trekking, and backpacking models. Focusing on lightweight and breathable elements, the company has become undeniably popular in the outdoors community.

The AL-X 89 XCR Mid is a progressive extension of the ’07 AL-X 88 XCR Mid that features a waterproof inner lining that is perfect for combating the wet and sticky tribulations you may come across. The rest of the upper is comprised of high-density GoreTex, which I hear is code word for indestructible. The midfoot and outsole is enveloped in a PU support wrap that provides a striking visual element and stellar support.

The AL-X 44 Lo features a completely waterproof upper, thanks to healthy allowances of breathable mesh. The shoe also incorporates the PU support wrap and a rubber outsole for added traction.

The AL-X 44 Lo retails for $125, while the AL-X 89 XCR Mid sells for $160. For more info, check out lowa.com

Here's your first look at what's ahead from Nike SB for the month of July 2008. There's everything from shoes to shirts; jackets to backpacks, and even something some called the "Space Tigers"...

words by Steve Jaconetta

Here’s a detailed look at the lot of Nike SB products that are set for release this month, July 2008. We have a nice variety of everything from kicks to tees; and socks to beanies. So lets start off with the apparel, and make you all get eager with anticipation for the shoes.

I’ll start with the headgear. We have everything from fitteds to beanies this month. First we have a nice SB Icon fitted hat in two grey-based colorways. One being a light grey with a nice yellow Nike SB logo in the middle and the other being a charcoal grey with a red Nike SB logo in the middle. Then we have the SB Houndstooth 5-panel hat which is grey based with a plaid design. Black, white, and university blue colors are used in the pattern. Even though it is the beginning of July, sometimes you have to stock up early.

Beanie hats are here! We have a nice and sample SB roll Beanie which is featured in three colors: red, light blue, and obsidian. Then there is the more standout look with the SB striped beanie. Two unique colorways with one being a simple and subtle white, light blue, and royal blue. The other is more of a louder colorway with a cactus green, charcoal grey, and red. Well, that’s it for the headgear, time to dive into the apparel.

I’ll start off by introducing the SB woven jacket. This is my favorite piece besides the tees. It has a full-zip as well as a hood and is in a nice black-based color with slated grey stripes all over and a touch of uni blue around the sides of the zipper as well as on the Nike SB logo which is found over the heart. Continuing on with the outerwear, they also are releasing a SB Icon zip-up fleece hoody. Coming in two colorways a charcoal grey and a nice light blue. They look very cozy and comfortable, perfect for the winter.

Now i’ll get into the rest. First is the SB striped polo, prefect for all the skaters out there who like to try out new looks in the scene. Two nice short sleeve colors with one being a nice cream, brown, and orange and the other less subtle being a cactus green, white, and black. With sweaters and sweatshirts coming back in style, Nike is bringing us the SB Icon crew shirt. It will come in two colors, the traditional black with red logo over the heart and a nice dark green with a tan logo. Shirts anyone? You know they can’t forget about the tees.

The classic SB Icon tee is everyone’s favorite tee. A simple Nike shirt with the Nike SB logo found in the center of the it. White with a purple logo and grey with a red logo are the two newest colors releasing for this month. We also cannot forget the rainbow style one that matches this month’s premiums now can we? It will come in both black and yellow and features a retro arcade-style vibe with the Nike SB design flowing down the front of the shirt in rainbow-like colors. Don’t worry the time you all are waiting for is next, right after we these out with some interesting pieces.

More SB socks for everyone to love! This time we have the SB Dunk re-issue socks for the eBay Dunk SB. To finish it off a nice backpack for all you school-bound people out there. The SB Eugene backpack is a monster! But it is also a thing of beauty in all black and can hold a ton! Ok, ok now onto the shoes…

First we have a new Blazer. The Blazer Low SB is in a nice varsity royal and black colorway and features perforated holes on the side panels as well as an all nubuck upper. then we have a new color of the Zoom Tre A.D. It features camouflage pattern found on the back heel as well as the rest of this sneaker in like colors. Another new color of the Zoom Classic SB is releasing and follows the design of the Tre. It’s in a nice army olive color withe the majority of the upper being in suede. P-Rod is next with the newest color of his signature shoe, the Zoom Air Paul Rodriguez 2.

This is in a very unique colorway with the use of different materials. We have leather, suede, and a slight touch of cement print on these as well. Last but not least, the Dunk Low Premium SB. Nicknamed the Space Tigers or the Randy Colvin’s. They match the rainbow tyle tees also. This Dunk features a full grain leather over canvas with a start print and yellow ochre Swoosh. The sock liner and tongue tag feature tiger stripes while the pink collar lining and bright green pops finish these beauties off with a bang.

Look for all the July 2007 Nike SB releases as a local skateshop near you very soon. The Dunk may be the hardest to find though as it is a premium and will only be available at select shops and on a limited quantity basis. For the most up-to-date info on all your Nike SB’s and other sneakers, checkout the Release Dates section here.
Hmm, I wonder what this could be? Is it a Penny or is it something totally in a new and different direction? Well here's your first look at the all new Nike Air 1/2 Cent...

words by Steve Jaconetta

It was just about a week ago that I first mentioned on SC.com that the Nike Penny line would be in full affect again starting in August with a new colorway of the Foamposite 1 (which if you haven’t read yet, you can here).

Now that is all fine and dandy, as it is just a few months later that the real magic returns in October with the long awaited return of the Nike Air Max Penny II. But what I haven’t touched on yet and only briefly mentioned before was that in 2009 along with the varsity purple Foamposite 1 and the return of the Nike Air Max Penny III is this; the Nike Air 1/2 Cent. What can it be might you ask? Well I have that answer for you.

While March of 2009 is quite a ways away, here is the first information regarding the already infamous 1/2 Cent. Yes to answer all your speculation it is a part of the Penny line. Also yes it is indeed a hybrid, or a fusion whatever you want to call it. The inspiration for this shoe along is to commemorate the historic career of Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, as well as his ad campaign partner Lil’ Penny.

Featuring a part of every known signature shoe that Penny wore throughout his career from the initial Foamposite 1 all the way down to the final Penny, the Air Max Penny IV. If you look hard enough, you can probably point out a few others as well, but i’ll leave that up to you. Why do this you might ask? Is it going to kill the legacy of the line by becoming another failed hybrid? Well as you can see from this first glimpse below, Nike seems to have come correct on this one.

So don’t worry Penny fans if you’ve felt unacknowledged in the sneaker world and have been dying for some more Penny love. Well pretty soon you’ll begin Penny fever all the way into ‘09 and beyond. The Nike Air 1/2 Cent will debut in March 2009 at a hefty price of $190. But that’s not all bad considering the Foamposite 1 retails for $200. These will be available at select urban accounts and a limited release as well.

Be sure to keep checking out the Release Dates section for all your current and most up-to-date info on the Nike Air 1/2 Cent, Penny line, and all of your other favorites to come.

What better way to celebrate this summer's Beijing Olympic Games than take it back to Barcelona for a forced graphic application atop the iconic Jordan VII?

words_Nick DePaula

Sorry — it’s only the first of the month and there’s easily already a winner loser for Yeeesh Of The Month.

The Air Jordan 7 Retro OC.

The 7 Retro OC, short for ‘Olympic Collection,’ is inspired by the artwork of Barcelona, Spain born sculptor, ceramicist and artist Joan Miro, known for his intricate graphics, patterning and sculptures throughout a prolonged career that extended into the 1970’s and early 1980’s while Miro aged into his mid-80’s. Barcelona is also of course where Michael Jordan convincingly won a Gold Medal in 1992 as part of the first pro-inclusive US Dream Team. Unfortunately, what we have here is a busy and perhaps forced graphic splash atop an otherwise unassumingly subtle upper made up of several simple overlays and accented by the iconic peaking midsole.

The white and black body colors of the shoe are accented by Spain’s yellow and red national colors along the midsole, while the rest of the synthetic leather upper as well as a first-for-the-VII translucent outsole are topped off with spotty abstract graphics of the American, German, Brazilian and Puerto Rican flags. You would think the flags of the US, Croatia and Lithuania would be included, as those teams made up the 1992 Barcelona-medaling countries, while Brazil finished 5th, Germany 7th and Puerto Rico 8th, respectively. Perhaps even the flag of Spain, maybe? Another missed step in execution due to legalities is the almost well-done packaging, which includes matching imagery on the sides of the box as well as an unprecedented five alternate laces. Unfortunately, the laces are aligned as to mimic the official Olympic Rings logo, yet they’re arranged out of order because the brand couldn’t legally exactly reproduce the recognizable arrangement.

While it was the original VII’s release and Michael’s presence on the stage of the 1992 Olympic Games that caused Tinker Hatfield to declare basketball at that time a “global game,” this type of graphic interpretation could hardly be what Tinker envisioned for the first model he decidedly removed all Nike Swooshes from — setting the stage for the Jumpman to stand on its own and later become a $800 Million business monster all its own.

Releasing Thursday, July 3rd at Barcelona-based boutique Opium, the Jordan 7 Retro OC will be initially released only in limited numbers. There will be a coinciding event taking place at Opium Barcelona beginning at 7:30 pm to celebrate the launch, with guests welcome on an invite-only basis. Look for a more wide release of these closer to August.

Now onto the pics. Yeeesh.

words_Nick DePaula

After much anticipation and a ridiculous level of online buzz (sorry!), the second quickstrike of the Nike Hyperdunk will be launching tomorrow in Santa Monica at UNDFTD, following up on the two insanely limited patent leather-based Kobe Bryant colorways. At 4pm on Wednesday, July 2nd, limited quantities of the Marty McFly-worn, Air Mag-inspired Hyperdunk will release, along with a limited (hint: key word of the day) t-shirt with a nod to Kobe’s first-ever MVP award. Good luck everyone — you’ll need it.

Posted earlier today by the infamous KAWS via his blog (found here), all the rumors for the past few months can be put to rest. The already infamous AF1 x KAWS collabo will indeed be releasing. It will be a part of July’s series of 1World Air Force 1’s to release. One of eighteen innovator’s to have the opportunity to take part in the next milestone in the history of the AF1, KAWS definitely did not let us down.

They feature a nice all black nubuck upper with a premium leather sockliner. The neon yellow gel sole as well as his signature “X” stitching around the toe really accent this shoe well. A thing of beauty, the black and neon yellow shoe laces are a nice addition as well.

While allocations, price, and release date is unknown at this time, stay tuned here as well as the 1World Website for the most current and up-to-date information on all the 1World Air Force 1 releases along with the AF1 x KAWS collabo.

The good folks at h(y)r collective have done it again, succesfully launching their third online magazine issue detailing the streetwear, accessories and design world we all have come to love and obsess about at times. Ryan Willms, Creative Director and Publisher, has evolved the magazine even further from Issue two, which featured two of the Bay Area’s more sharp mavens of streetwear — graphic designer-extraordinaire Benny Gold and denim enthusiast Kiya Babzani of Self Edge. In Issue three, features include United Front’s Jesar Gabino, Portland’s own Tanner Goods, Swedish fashion label Our Legacy, bike project MASH and Edmonton-based boutique Haven.

This was one of the last Air Force 1s released in 2006. They were also one of the last to come in the orange Nike box as it was switched over to a special grey box in 2007 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the AF1. These GRs are very nice and clean with a mixture of nubuck and leather on the all black upper. Throw on a nice university blue colored sole to add a little more flavor and you have a great shoe here. Black and university blue always go well together and they do not disappoint here.
