Sneaker designer Jeremy Scott is an advocate of free-thinking and originality, which has landed him quite a few memorable drops within the adidas Originals by Originals line. His most boundary-pushing effort to date may be his Teddy Bear shoes, and while most of us applauded Scott's creativity and adidas Originals for giving him the platform, we wondered if the Teddy Bears would ever be taken seriously on the open market. Would the public embrace these original concepts to the point where they'd go out and spend money in support? Never underestimate the power of a celebrity co-sign, especially when the celebrity is currently as influential as Young Money/Cash Money's Lil' Wayne.
On BET's 106 & Park New Year's Eve Party broadcast, the chart-topper took the stage wearing an outfit that immediately drew attention from viewers. While the Billionaire Boys Club EVA Varsity Jacket was definitely a nice selection, it was Wayne's kicks that have generated all the buzz. On his feet was the brown colorway of Scott's Teddy Bears, which were easily noticeable on TV. An obviously excited Jeremy Scott hit his Twitter followers with a New Year's tweet declaring Wayne as the first person to rock his cuddly kicks.
Since Wayne's performance, there has been a lot more buzz about the Teddy Bears online. Because of the creative nature of the shoe, not only is the shoe being talked about in the sneaker world, but amongst casual sneaker consumers as well. Do you think a co-sign from arguably the most popular rapper in the world will lead to the Teddy Bears becoming a must-have shoe in some circles?
The best part about this news is that Scott is going to continue to raise the bar with his designs whether celebrities wear them or not - a true visionary.
